Margaret Smith

It is with great sadness we mourn the loss of our Spotlight Family member and dear friend Margaret. Margaret was a long standing member on and off stage and the committee. After retiring from performing Margaret was part of our front of House Team always with a huge welcoming smile and a hug to those lucky enough to know her. Our heartfelt sympathy and love go out to her family at this saddest of times. ?

Spotlight MTG is sad to hear of the passing of Duncan Campbell.

Duncan performed with us in the past and was on stage for many of our shows including My Fair Lady, Sweet Charity and Barnum as well as pantomimes.

He also sang in our weekly Summer Showtime performances some years ago.

He will be remembered by us as a talented performer and a gentleman. Our condolences to his wife Joan and all his family

How you can feel festive in 2020!

How you can feel festive in 2020!

What’s more Christmassy than going to the panto!

Although going to the theatre can’t happen this year, we are excited to announce we are bringing a filmed version of our 2015 panto Puss in Boots by Ben Crocker to the Oban Phoenix Cinema on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December.

Puss in Boots tells the tale of penniless Jack Miller and his faithful cat, Puss. Jack falls for the beautiful Princess Esmerelda but the wicked ogre Grimgrab has plans to wed her himself.  He employs the services of bad fairy Pernicia to oversee her kidnapping by Jack’s hapless brothers Jasper and Jethro.  Luckily Pernicia’s sister, the good fairy Priscilla, is never far away to ensure things don’t get too out of hand.  Attempting to help, but often unknowingly hindering Jack and Puss, are Queen Wendy, King Wally and Bobbie the Royal Page.

Panto regulars Roddy MacEachan, Kevin Baker, Morven Wright and Fran Melville share the stage with a 30-strong talented cast including Stephen Glen-Lee as the King, John Robinson as Jasper, Richard Baker as Jack with Nicole O’Brien as Princess Esmerelda, Aimie Baker and Ellie Cooper as the good and bad fairies, David Johnston as Grimbag, Stevo Finlayson as Bobbie and Sue Baker as our fearless talking cat who knows how to rock a pair of boots!

Will Puss save the day from a cat-astrophe?  Showings are at 2.30pm on Saturday 12th Dec and 1pm and 4.30pm on Sunday 13th Dec.  All tickets cost £2 and are available from (social distanced seating system in place).  Don’t miss out, get your tickets now for a purrfect festive treat.

Future show schedule

Dear Spotlighters, we hope you are all doing well in these strange times.

We wanted to check in and let you know that following a committee meeting this week, it has been decided that we plan to stick to our usual show schedule.

This means that we will perform our main show in Spring 2021 and a panto in December 2021. The concert raising funds for the Phoenix Cinema will also go ahead with dates to be confirmed.

This is understandably subject to some movement if the government advice regarding social gathering recommends some delay.

More information will follow in due course.

Stay safe everyone and we look forward to treading the boards with you all when the time comes.

Fundraising concert for the cinema – May 2020

Interested in performing in a musical theatre concert? Want to make a difference in your community? We are producing a concert to raise funds for the next stage of development of the Oban Phoenix Cinema. The concert will be performed on Saturday 16th May at the cinema. To bring the show to a wider audience we are also perform at Appin Village Hall on Friday 15th May.

This concert is in association with Spotlight Musical Theatre Group (Spotlight MTG) and the lead production team are Louisa Hyde, Ellie Cooper and Stephen Day. For insurance reasons all cast will become temporary members for the duration of this production. Spotlight MTG is usually only open to 16+ but this is an opportunity for younger budding stars of the future to get involved and tread the boards.

We are holding an open meeting on Wednesday 19th February at 7.30pm at the Guide Hall in Oban to share more information and work out the rehearsal schedule. If you are interested in performing or helping out backstage please email so we can gauge interest in the project.

Mull Theatre coming to Appin and Benderloch village halls on 12th and 13th February 2019

A new play about one of Scotland’s great unsung heroes, Tom Johnston, once described by Churchill as the ‘King of Scotland’, focusing on his struggles to bring “light to the glens.” Through incredible feats of engineering and political manoeuvring, he sought to transform the lives of everyone in the north of Scotland by bringing hydroelectric power to the Highlands & Islands.

A story of power-and the struggle for it.

Reproduction of the Tom Johnston portrait by kind permission of Scottish Friendly Assurance.

An informal programme of script-in-hand play readings of new plays and works-in-progress.
Readings, encounters, questions & answers, feedback and chat offer audiences the chance to be part of and enjoy the fun of the creative process.

This drama performance resulted from a bite size activity that Mull Theatre ran at Rockfield last year. They are bringing the performance to Appin and Benderloch, as well as Corran Halls on Saturday 9th. After the show they will be running another bite size session with reading from new plays and work in progress. There will be opportunities for questions input etc so it would be great to get the word out to as many drama folk as possible.

Benderloch Village Hall Wednesday 13th February at 7.30

Evelyn Campbell.

Evelyn Campbell.

For those in the group who were members during our time as Oban Operatic Society, you may have performed or worked with Evelyn Campbell. Sadly, Evelyn passed away a few days ago. She took part on stage whilst a member, most notably in 1990 playing Aunt Eller in the group’s first production of Oklahoma. Evelyn will be remembered for her passion for singing and was also a talented pianist. Our condolences to her family at this sad time.

Sad Times….

Sad Times….

Spotlight Musical Theatre Group are sad to learn of the passing of former member and friend, Maureen Miller. Maureen, along with her husband Geoff, was part of our group for many years.

Although Maureen did not take to the stage with us, her help and support off-stage was invaluable, including her talent for making us some lovely costumes and her tireless work front of house at many shows.

An elegant, kind lady with a wonderful sense of humour. We will miss her.

Our thoughts are with Geoff at this very difficult time.
